Petersburg is a small fishing town in Southeast Alaska. Located on Alaska Airlines’ flight path, this city has 1 flight into town and 1 flight out of town each day. The Alaska State Ferry also stops here as well as a couple of smaller cruise lines. If you find yourself in this neck of the woods, you’re in luck. Albeit small, this city has a lot to offer.
- Hike the Hungry Point Trail: This 40 minute trail starts at one end of the town and makes its way towards the airport. Well marked and not too challenging, the trail has a few benches and boardwalks along the way with views of the muskeg and mountains. The trail ends by the community softball / baseball fields and is a quick walk (about 10 minutes) down the hill to the main road.
- Explore the Wrangell Narrows by boat: The Wrangell Narrows is a waterway that starts at Frederick Sound in the north and makes its way to Sumner Straight – about a 22 mile stretch of riverlike water calmly flowing. Hop on a fishing boat or consider renting a boat in this calm location and try your hand at Salmon or Halibut fishing. You will see crab pot and shrimp pot buoys floating throughout as well as seals’ heads and porpoise fins. As you navigate the narrows, you will see markers and cans lining the deepest places within the channels. Large cruise ships often take this route.
- Check out the fishing docks & cannery: There is no doubt that Petersburg is a commercial fishing town. From the large commercial cannery located at the edge of town to the commercial fishing boats in the docks, Petersburg is an angler’s dream town. Embrace the vibe and head down to the docks. Check out the large ships and talk to a few captains. They have some awesome stories about their time on the water. You may also run into one of the ships from the Deadliest Catch (I have!).
- Try Papa Bear’s Pizza for dinner:Located on the main street in town (N Nordic Drive), Papa Bear’s is a local and tourist favorite. The delicious pizzas are quite large and come with Alaska prices (pricey) but the atmosphere is friendly and nothing warms you up like a piping hot piece of pizza after a day out on the water.
